Typically Thai Train Trip

Ooooooh. The Hua Hin station has a fancy new electronic sign. It shows scheduled times and anticipated delays. That’s an improvement over the old system of zero information. Getting basic information like ‘Has the train left Bangkok yet?’ didn’t happen. Now it’s there for everyone to see.

But this is Thailand, so when the train arrived 25 minutes late the signboard showed zero delay.

Overheard a couple guys discussing the sleeper train north from Butterworth, the train I was going to take. They noted the departure time in the Thai schedule was 13:15 but the Malaysian schedule had it at 14:20. My ticket said 13:15. Was about to join the conversation when one said the times were an hour different because of the time zone difference. ‘And the five minutes?’ asked the other man. ‘That’s Thailand.’ said the first man.
