Why so many near this train station?

Google Maps was useful for seeing if there was anything of interest near train stations in Japan on my first trip. In September, I’ll likely change trains in Odawara on the way to Hakone, so I gmapped the station.

The map area is about 2km (~1.2 miles) wide, 1km tall. The magenta dots are schools: 1 Kindergarten, 1 Elementary School, 2 Junior High Schools, 3 High Schools, 1 Women’s Junior College and 1 University. Odawara’s population is 200k and it’s on the edge of a relatively lightly populated mountainous region. Are the morning and evening trains filled with school children who live in the boonies? Could be a photo op.
